A great metaphor for careers, look at your career path not as a ladder but more of a rock wall.

As you start looking at your career from a different view, look for opportunities, look for growth, look for impact, look for mission. Move sideways, move down, move on, move off. Build your skills and focus on you. Evaluate what you can do. Do real work. Take a sales quota, a line role, an ops job. Don’t plan too much, and don’t expect a direct climb. Take whatever opportunity you have in front of you and make the best of it in pursuit of your mission.  Every job has ups and down but the focus needs to be on you.  How can you make this work week, this day, this hour, this minute about you and building something employers want to buy.  You can accept the circumstance and wait for a better opportunity to come or you can take the current circumstance and use it to build a reputation and develop a story that will allow you to accomplish your personal mission.

Your strength will come from building trust and earning respect. You’re going to need talent, skill, and imagination and vision. But more than anything else, you’re going to need the ability to communicate authentically, to speak so that you inspire the people around you and to listen so that you continue to learn each and every day on the job.  The most important part of being able to communicate authentically is to speak the truth, be honest. If you watch young children, you’ll immediately notice how honest they are. As adults, we are never this honest. And that’s not a bad thing. But it’s not always a good thing either.
